THE “WHY?”

I believe Art and Beauty are as important as eating and sleeping. They are a vital part of what it means to be a human being.

Our culture is experiencing an existential crisis of meaning. The Good, the True, and the Beautiful have the potential to restore equilibrium to a confused and chaotic world.

THE “WHO?”

My name is Katie Marquette.

In brief… I write essays, make podcasts, audio edit for public radio and independent shows, spearhead memory-making and storytelling audio initiatives, ride horses, and read books. I’m passionate about art, history, literature, and the Catholic faith. I am also the full-time wrangler of two small daughters.

In not so brief… I have a B.A. in religious studies and English from St. Mary’s College of Maryland and an M.A. in Conflict Resolution with a Certificate in Humanitarian and Refugee Emergencies from Georgetown University.

My academic life, like my personal interests, has been diverse and varied. I traveled to both Rwanda and South Africa during graduate school while I studied reconciliation and post-conflict societies. In undergrad, I wrote my senior thesis on St. Catherine of Siena’s mystical treatise, The Dialogue and spent a semester studying literature at Oxford.

I’ve worked for non-profits, research institutes, and even a horse tack shop. Somehow along the way I stumbled into the wonderful world of audio and sound design. I was thrilled to discover such an innovative, evocative medium for storytelling. I started working as a producer in public radio.

In 2020 I left my full-time radio gig to stay home with my kids and and create my own projects.

I started the Born of Wonder podcast in 2021. I was inspired by words attributed to St. Gregory the Great - “we make idols of our concepts, but wisdom is born of wonder.” In other words, what makes life worth living is a sense of wonder and awe.

On this podcast I explore literature, art, philosophy, theology, liturgy, and culture with an aim of bringing us all to a state of gratitude and receptivity to the many wonders in this life. You can find Born of Wonder on podbean, iTunes, Spotify, or wherever you download your podcasts.

“The sweetest thing in all my life has been the longing — to reach the Mountain, to find the place where all the beauty came from — my country, the place where I ought to have been born. Do you think it all meant nothing, all the longing? The longing for home? For indeed it now feels not like going, but like going back.”
— C.S. Lewis, Till We Have Faces

THE “HOW?”

I hope to explore themes of beauty, truth, and goodness through essays, photo journals, travel guides, and basically whatever else suits me.

I would love for you to comment and contribute to discussions surrounding these topics!
